Worldwide SD-WAN for LEMO
Founded in 1946 in Morges on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, LEMO Group is a global leader in the field of custom high-performance interconnection solutions. Recognized by their iconic Push-Pull connector, the company produces a wide range of metal and plastic connectors, high-performance wiring and cables, and cable assemblies. LEMO’s broad and modular portfolio includes 90,000 off-the-shelf connectors and 20,000 associated qualified components.
From deep oceans to outer space, about 150,000 customers worldwide in industries such as medical, security & defense, energy, broadcasting, manufacturing, and aerospace rely on the company’s solutions to connect their applications and seamlessly transfer fibre optic signals, power, fluids or high-speed data.
The company, headquartered in Ecublens in the western part of Switzerland, has 5 production sites and operates 20 subsidiaries worldwide. What sets LEMO apart from many other companies: their independence thanks to being entirely family-owned. This enables them to have a fully vertically integrated ecosystem incorporating all stages of R&D, manufacturing and services, as well as a global supply chain, creating over 95 percent of the added value in-house.

As part of re-evaluating its IT infrastructure, LEMO decided to implement a cloud-based ERP solution from Oracle as replacement for their local ERP instances which were previously hosted in the company’s geographically dispersed sites. As a manufacturing company, LEMO heavily depends on the 24/7 availablity and accessibility of its ERP system, in particular since there is a permanent stream of data between the production machinery and the ERP system. The existing, self-managed and non-scalable WAN infrastructure with its hub and spoke topology, comprising PaloAlto firewalls and site-to-site VPN tunnels, wasn’t up for the task as foundation for the new cloud-based Oracle solution. In particular, the setup with VPN tunnels was difficult to maintain and troubleshoot, and it didn’t provide much transparency of the traffic in the network.
To enable the new ERP system, LEMO opted for an SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Networking) approach. The list of requirements for the new corporate network was quite demanding: more flexibility for connecting locations around the world, better network performance and a real-time dashboard for providing transparency of the entire network. After an assessment of various technology vendors and solution providers, Deutsche Telekom was awarded the contract to design, implement and manage the SD-WAN solution across 27 company sites in 17 countries based on HPE Aruba’s EdgeConnect platform. During a period of approx. 6 months, Deutsche Telekom seamlessly migrated LEMO’s existing infrastructure comprising MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and Internet as well as the previous overlay of VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunnels to the modern SD-WAN architecture.
With the newly integrated SD-WAN solution, LEMO is well prepared for connecting its sites around the world to the new Oracle ERP system in a secure and performant manner. Moreover, the company enjoys a number of benefits, such as easier integration of future cloud services, central configuration and management of network components and security policies, and simplified network operations. In particular, the Aruba-based solution allows to create a fully meshed network with redundancy options and enables traffic prioritization. And thanks to an easy to read dashboard, gaining transparency of the entire network is no longer guesswork.
