Elaborate TV production

Until now, live productions at RTL were mainly realized with wired cameras. For live transmission from mobile camera systems, complex and proprietary wireless networks had to be installed independently. Particular focus was placed on uninterrupted transmission between the studios and the outdoor and event areas. A special challenge was posed by an elevator and indoor and outdoor transmission across several floors.

TheSolution

Stadler Zug

Private 5G campus network from Deutsche Telekom

In just 12 weeks, Deutsche Telekom implemented indoor and outdoor coverage with a private 5G network to ensure live and seamless mobile television broadcasts with 5G camera systems.

The project included planning, commissioning, approvals, construction, installations, commissioning, calibrations, tests, and handover – all in close collaboration with various partners.

The in-house campus network for RTL, covering an area of around 35,000 square meters, provides a tailor-made infrastructure for optimized performance and dynamic environments. The short distances of the independent 5G architecture support data-intensive applications with ultra-short response times in the millisecond range. This enables particularly fast data processing.

A total of six antennas were installed on the premises for this purpose: two outdoors and four indoors. All data traffic remains within the local Cologne-Deutz campus network. RTL can flexibly adapt the private network and manage various functions on demand. For example, data traffic within the campus network is prioritized for specific applications as needed.

"We are proud to be the first media company in Germany to operate a private, productive 5G campus network in close cooperation with RTL Technology and Deutsche Telekom. Our productions benefit from more flexible camera angles and greater freedom of movement both inside and outside the studios."

TheResult

The deployment of the new 5G campus network at RTL brings significant advantages for live productions for camera crews, presenters, and directors: It enables flexible and wireless camera operation, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming radio network installations. The rapid deployment of the infrastructure in just twelve weeks and seamless transmission with low latency and high bandwidth ensure stable live signals, even through potential sources of interference. This results in faster production workflows, seamless transitions between camera perspectives, and a better viewing experience. The 5G network has already proven itself at the 2024 European Football Championship and demonstrates the enormous potential for companies that rely on reliable and powerful connections.
